Retro Roundup

 Here'a a selection of prehistoric crud unearthed from my moldering archives, all newly scanned from the original art. Not gonna try to explain any of this stuff, you figure it out and let me know. Got a couple new things in the works and a few finished projects that I'm waiting for the go-ahead from my clients before posting so... Stay tuned for MORE (EVENTUAL) ACTION!

Tales Too Terrible To Tell

Here are a couple of 1 page filler strips I did for Tales Too Terrible To tell, published by New England Comics way back in 1992. TTTTT was the first comic to mine the vast terrain of public domain 1950s horror comics which has become a cottage industry for some folks in recent years. "Fear-Filled Facts" was a "Ripley's Believe It or Not" parody with a horror twist; I wrote and drew 2 of 'em, one of which was not used. Title lettering in the first strip by NEC editor Bob "The Crippler" Polio. Sorry if the text is hard to read, that's 25 year old rubber cement rotting merrily away. I don't remember why the second strip (below) wasn't published and I've lost track of the script somewhere along the line so the art is all you get for that one. Early Daze

Here's a bunch of early work dating from 1989-1994 or thereabouts. Mostly published in zines and minicomix I was putting out back then. Big Break was a sex-ed comic put out by the government of Manitoba which I inked over pencils by well-known comics pro George Freeman. George returned the favor by inking my Fanboy piece, making it probably the best-inked drawing on this blog. Stay tuned for MORE PREHISTORIC ACTION!.

Rockin' Weird

Got a backlog of stuff to post but first the big news: Rockin' Weird, the first ever book collection of my work is on it's way! With 216 big pages and more than 440 drawings spanning the last 25 years, RW features the best record sleeves, rock'n'roll posters, zine illustrations, comic strips and miscellaneous ephemera of my career, plus a bunch of previously unpublished stuff as well. You can preorder a copy of this majestic tome, surely the most significant book since the Bible, here. Buy two copies in case you drop one in the mashed potatoes. Crowe A-Go-Go

Here's the first of 2 pages I did for the new issue of Nix Comics Quarterly which is due out soon. Continuing the adventures of incarcerated shock rocker/serial murderer Aleister Crowe, this page is the intro to another story written by Ken Eppstein (as was the above page) and drawn by Rich Trask, with another Crowe page at the end wrapping up this vignette. I gotta say that everything I've seen from this upcoming issue (which is #8 in the series) looks great and makes me real proud to be associated with this fine as wine funnybook. Worm Attack!

Here's the page I had published in the most recent (and final?) issue of Puck Magazine from Italy. Couldn't be prouder to have had my work included among such a great lineup on cartoonists from all around the world, and to have gotten to contribute to a book with such a wild concept: Over 100 artists drawing their individual vision of the apocalypse. Rockin' Bones: Back From The Grave?

Savage Sword Of Hamzig

With the new issue of Roctober (#51) only a few weeks away I guess it's time to post the Hamzig installment that was featured in the gargantuan 50th issue a few months back. I was trying for a Williamson/Frazetta type of look with this one which didn't really come off but what the heck.  I have an amazing Roctober-related project lined up which I'll be working on later this year so keep an eye on this blog for more info on that. Meanwhile, pick up the new issue to see the latest Hamzig chapter and the usual array of weird cultural detritus that is synonymous with the esteemed Roctober brand. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

The current issue of Roctober has been out for a couple months now so I guess it's okay to post up this latest Hamzig installment as published therein. God Kills

Here's the first page of one of the stories I drew for the first issue of Nix Comics Quarterly. Sorry I can't post the whole thing but we do need people to actually buy the mag so we can keep putting out new issues. This is the longest comix story I've done in several years and my first ever attempt at coloring a multi-page story. I had a lotta fun drawing this and hopefully I'll be contributing more stuff to future issues of Nix. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Nix For Kix

Here's the cover art for Nix Comics Quarterly #1, due out in January 2011. I'm also gonna have 5 pages of comix in this issue, all written by Nix editor Ken Eppstein. I'm just finishing a 4 page story called "Man Loves, God Kills?" which I think is the best comix work I've ever done. I'll put up a sample page or two once I get 'em all wrapped up. It's A Long Way Back To Germany

I thought I had posted this one long ago but apparently not. It's a poster I did a couple years back for one of the shows on Electric Frankenstein's 2008 German tour. My idea here was to combine rock poster art with comix, an approach that I plan to keep experimenting with. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Hamzig

For the past couple of years I've been doing a li'l comic strip for Roctober chronicling the adventures of diminutive Goth rock warrior Hamzig. Here are the first 2 strips. I'll post the rest of 'em over the next couple of days. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Tripmaker

Inspired by '60s fuzz punk and heavy reading of underground comix at an impressionable age, Tripmaker is possibly the best comic strip I've ever done. This one was widely published, appearing in Roctober, Misty Lane, Fiesta Germany and possibly one or two other zines. Needless to say this was inspired by the classic song of the same name from the second album by The Seeds. I had a chance to send a copy of this strip to Sky Saxon a few years ago but unfortunately he didn't share his thoughts about it with me. Stay tuned for MORE LYSERGIC ACID ACTION!

Here's my comic strip tribute to rockabilly/country legend Wanda Jackson, drawn on the occasion of her induction into Roctober magazine's Hall Of Dynamic Greatness back in 1999.
