The Demon's Claws

My old buddy Brian, drummer with the Demon's Claws and a bunch of other happening Montreal combos, asked me to design this poster for the release party celebrating the new Claws LP The Defrosting Of Walt Disney. Kind of a different style for me but I'm pretty stoked about how it came out. Also on the bill for these two shows are rockabilly maniac Bloodshot Bill and Brian's punk rock side project Genital Hospital. I should have some more new stuff for you in the next few days so... Let's Have A Party!

Hey kids, today is the one-year anniversary of this blog, so pour a beer and celebrate! Back when I started this thing I decided that I would do a post a day for one year and somehow or other I actually managed to stick to that schedule all the way through. From here on out I'm gonna drop the post-a-day rule. New work will get posted as soon as it's done and there is still a fair sized pile of worthwhile older stuff to scan and put up here but updates are gonna be a bit less relentlessly regular in the future. Please do keep an eye on this space for more wild weirdness coming at you when you least expect it. Oh yeah, today's image is the last of the wacky parody T-shirt designs I made for a local upstart entrepreneur back in the '90s. Scroll down a ways if you want to see the other two in the series. The Mule And The Pussycat

Here's another of the half dozen of so illustrations I did for Pussycat magazine back in the mid-'90s. This one illustrates editor Mark's pugnacious interview with the bass player of bluesy alt-rock combo Mule. I thought all of these Pussycat drawings came out pretty well but this one is my favorite. Freaks!

I made this drawing back in the mid-'90s for a friend of mine who ran a copy shop. It's a weird inside joke that would take too long to explain for non-Winnipeggers so you kids will have to figure it out for yourselves. Good luck, you poor souls. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Acromegaly Alien

Here's another drawing originally intended for my unpublished Ugly Art zine The Unbelievable Uglies #2. This one was used as a cover for the cool Terminal Brainrot zine outta Ohio back in the '90s. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Hot Rod Zombie

I drew this one back in 2001 for some project that never got completed (details of which I don't recall at this late date). It was later recycled into T-shirt art for Bay Area car club the Road Zombies. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Like, Long Hair

This one was drawn back in 1996 as the cover for a cool Italian zine called Mondo Capellone that covered '60s garage rock and related topics. The drawing is mostly based on the song "Riot On Sunset Strip" by The Standells with some references to the movie of the same name and various other mid-'60s long haired happenings. Portrait Of The Artist As A Rotting Zombie

I drew this zombified self portrait back in 1997. It was printed in an issue of Winnipeg's premiere alt comix anthology Sunburn. I changed phone numbers awhile back so don't bother trying to crank call me. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Castle Of Freaks

When the (Chicago, Roctober-connected) Goblins started their fan club back in the mid-'90s, they held a contest for fans of the band to suggest possible names for the club. My humble suggestion ("The Swingin' Creepers") failed to make the cut even though there ended up being two winners; "Castle Of Freaks" highlighting the creepy Halloween side of the band's persona and "We're A Winner!" reflecting their socially conscious, positive-message-for-the-kids proclivities. This logo was designed to be the masthead for the official fan club newsletter which ran for a few issues back around 1997-98. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Stoned

I drew this logo back in the mid-'90s for the guy who ran the Dig It! Records label over in France. Furiously Stoned was the name of his planned garage zine but it never came out. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Wacky Packages

I drew these images way back in the '90s for a local entrepreneur who planned a line of T-shirts featuring rude cartoon parodies of popular products. As far as I know no shirts were ever actually made of these. There's at least one more in the series but I can't find a scan of it right now so I'll have to post that one later. Stay Sick

This cryptic bit of Crampage was drawn for Roctober magazine's 2007 spinoff publication Chic-A Go-Go Comics. It's based on a frame from a video interview with The Cramps conducted by puppet mascot Ratso which was aired on the Chic-A Go-Go cable access TV show. This drawing also appeared in Roctober #47 as part of their tribute to Lux Interior following his tragic death. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Coffin Nails

This lovable character is Smokin' Dick, subject of a song by Chicago's Goblins that appeared on a 7" flexidisc issued by Roctober magazine way back in 1995. There was some talk of building a Muppet-style Smokin' Dick puppet to help get the song's anti-smoking message across to the kids, but I don't know if that ever actually happened. Anyway this is to date the only flexidisc release to feature Merinuk artwork on the sleeve. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Living Dead Girl

This one was drawn back in 2006 and was used as label art for a CD by The Independents. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Screamin'

This screamin' alien was drawn back in 2001 as an ad for esteemed German label Screaming Apple Records. The final version had covers of various Screaming Apple releases in all those records the alien is holding, plus some text with info about them, but that version is on a CDR that won't open anymore so I guess you kids will have to make do with just the raw art. Pantychrist

Here's the tray card art for the 2005 debut CD by Hamilton, Ontario grrl punkers Pantychrist. Drummer Patty currently pounds the skins in another savage all-grrl punk rock combo, Rackula. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Sugar Sugar

This drawing of R&B/soul goddess Sugar Pie DeSanto is yet another excerpt from the forthcoming Roctober interview compilation volume Flying Saucer Rock'n'Roll. I'm still waiting for news on when this epic tome will hit the street but rest assured that you Rubber Room readin' reprobates will be the first to hear about it when the word comes down. Cemetary Girls

I drew this one back in 1995 as a T-shirt design for wild Spanish garage combo Dr. Explosion. The band is still going although singer/guitarist Jorge (holding lantern in the drawing) is the only original member. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Final Conflict

This was the poster for a planned Winnipeg show by venerable UK anarcho-punks Conflict. The whole Conflict tour was canceled and legendary locals The Unwanted ended up headlining the show. Stay tuned for MORE ANARCHISTIC ACTION!

Creepin' In The Cavern

Just finished this poster for a local show featuring heavy punk/metal veterans Big Trouble In Little China, messed up hardcore punks Everyone's Fired!!! and one of my fave local combos, The Blowholes with their sub-aquatic girls-in-the-garage sound. Still A Lotta Rhythm In These Rockin' Bones

Another weird one for you today. This is the cover art for a 4 song Cramps bootleg 7" that came out back in the early '90s and yep, it's just a cheap black and white xerox of the cover of Rockin' Bones #1. The songs are alternate mixes from the rare white label promo version of the first Cramps LP, Songs The Lord Taught Us. This surfaced again a few years back as part of a whole slew of Cramps bootleg reissues. You'd think the cheap bums who put this out might have sent me a promo copy but no, I hadda shell out hard earned cash to get one. Anyway, I love The Cramps and this is probably as close as I'll ever get to doing a sleeve for them so what the hell. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Really Big Show

Here's the cover art for the first issue of kool Greek garage zine Lost In Tyme. This one actually started back in 1997 as an album cover concept sketch for Arizona garage/psych combo The Marshmallow Overcoat. I touched up the pencil drawing and inked it in 2004, the first of 5 Lost In Tyme covers I've done to date. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Shock Trooper In A Stupor

This was the T-shirt design for the 1995 edition of Garage Shock. The Estrus garage scene was at its peak around this time and it was another jam packed 4 day onslaught of trashy rock'n'roll at the 3-B Tavern in Bellingham, WA. I think the original art for this was in the Estrus warehouse when it burned to the ground some years back but I dug out a nice clean photocopy for your viewing pleasure. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!
