I finally got my hands on a copy of Flying Saucers Rock'n'Roll, the amazing compilation of wild interviews from the pages of Roctober magazine so to celebrate here's a previously unseen (on this blog anyway) illustration from the book. I have to admit that I didn't know much about actor/musician/activist Oscar Brown Jr's career but based on the interview I thought a bit of R. Crumb stylistic homage might fit well with his '60s and '70s inner city revolutionary political activism. I am super stoked with how well the book came out. It's a really wonderful compendium of info on some amazing and unfairly neglected artists. Check it out if you get a chance and as always... Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Bloodshot Eyes

Here's the front and back art for the soon-to-be-released Bloodshot Bill 7" on good old Transistor 66 Records. Bloodshot is one of the wildest rockers goin' today and a real nice fella to boot so it was a kick to get to work on this sleeve design for him. I first saw him play in a little club here in Winnipeg 6 or 7 years back and that was when I envisioned the drunken skeleton w/pompadour image which adorns the back of this sleeve. Gonna be drawing BB again soon as he is headlining this year's Transistor 66 10th anniversary weekender in April and I am designing the poster for that. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

This was my contribution to the extremely cool, limited edition 2011 publication The Winnipeg Book Of The Undead which compiled zombie art by a wide variety of local cartoonists and illustrators. My drawing depicts a zombie assault on the famous intersection of Portage Avenue and Main Street in downtown Winnipeg. Back in 2005 I did the art and layout for the Eternal Bond CD by my old pals The Independents. This year the album is making its debut on vinyl so I was called upon to revise and update the original sleeve design and here be the result. My first idea was to do a major reworking of the original front cover design which you can see below. We finally decided to use something much closer to the CD version for the LP sleeve but the revised devil head art will be used on stickers and T-shirts. Stay tuned for MORE SATANIC ACTION!

Here's the poster for an upcoming benefit fundraiser for Solidarity Rock, a project aimed at strengthening ties between the Cuban and Canadian punk rock scenes. I just did the illustration for this with the final design being masterminded by local punk rock graphic design maestro (and Kids On Fire drummer) Steve Hallick. The moshin' Castro drawing is of course an homage to Shawn Kerri's famous Skankman logo used by the Circle Jerks. Latest word is that Flying Saucers Rock'n'Roll, the amazin' compilation volume of wigged out interview action from the august pages of Roctober magazine which I have been blabbin' about since the very beginning of this here blog will finally be hitting the streets sometime in the spring or summer of 2011. In fact I have just agreed to draw the cover art for this epic tome to go along with the 10 interior illustrations that I drew back in 2009. To celebrate this thrilling news flash, here's another illo from the book featuring outlaw country legend David Allan Coe. This career spanning DAC interview is probably the single best and most astonishing conversation in Roctober history. In fact, it's actually the thing that made me the huge DAC fan that I am today, so I was super-stoked to get to do this illustration to accompany its reappearance in FSR&R. This one was drawn back in 1998 as the poster for the first ever Misfits show here in Winnipeg. Due to a miscommunication between the promoter and myself the posters were never printed, though some photocopies of the art were made and given away at the show. Otherwise this has remained unseen until now, so here it is in a newly scanned and colored version. Also on the bill for this show were local legends The Horribles with their street-tough brand of horror punk. If I remember rightly the photo of singer Andy O. that's on the cover of the Horribles CD was taken at this show. Castle Of Freaks

When the (Chicago, Roctober-connected) Goblins started their fan club back in the mid-'90s, they held a contest for fans of the band to suggest possible names for the club. My humble suggestion ("The Swingin' Creepers") failed to make the cut even though there ended up being two winners; "Castle Of Freaks" highlighting the creepy Halloween side of the band's persona and "We're A Winner!" reflecting their socially conscious, positive-message-for-the-kids proclivities. This logo was designed to be the masthead for the official fan club newsletter which ran for a few issues back around 1997-98. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

This cryptic bit of Crampage was drawn for Roctober magazine's 2007 spinoff publication Chic-A Go-Go Comics. It's based on a frame from a video interview with The Cramps conducted by puppet mascot Ratso which was aired on the Chic-A Go-Go cable access TV show. Coffin Nails

This lovable character is Smokin' Dick, subject of a song by Chicago's Goblins that appeared on a 7" flexidisc issued by Roctober magazine way back in 1995. There was some talk of building a Muppet-style Smokin' Dick puppet to help get the song's anti-smoking message across to the kids, but I don't know if that ever actually happened. Anyway this is to date the only flexidisc release to feature Merinuk artwork on the sleeve. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

This screamin' alien was drawn back in 2001 as an ad for esteemed German label Screaming Apple Records. The final version had covers of various Screaming Apple releases in all those records the alien is holding, plus some text with info about them, but that version is on a CDR that won't open anymore so I guess you kids will have to make do with just the raw art. Another weird one for you today. This is the cover art for a 4 song Cramps bootleg 7" that came out back in the early '90s and yep, it's just a cheap black and white xerox of the cover of Rockin' Bones #1. The songs are alternate mixes from the rare white label promo version of the first Cramps LP, Songs The Lord Taught Us. This surfaced again a few years back as part of a whole slew of Cramps bootleg reissues. You'd think the cheap bums who put this out might have sent me a promo copy but no, I hadda shell out hard earned cash to get one. Anyway, I love The Cramps and this is probably as close as I'll ever get to doing a sleeve for them so what the hell. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

The Estrus garage scene was at its peak around this time and it was another jam packed 4 day onslaught of trashy rock'n'roll at the 3-B Tavern in Bellingham, WA. I think this was taking place in Ontario somewhere but I don't have a version of this with the text added and the details on the whole thing have gotten a little murky in my scrambled cranium. Anyway this was at the same time that I was doing the Back From The Cave poster series and I must admit that I was actually getting kinda sick of drawing cavemen by the time I did this one. Here's the cover for Volume 1 of the South American Teenage Garage Punk series of 7" comps, issued on Spanish label Butterfly Records back in 2003. Bands on this one were The Tandooris, Los Peyotes, Elio & Thee Horribles and Los Supersonicos, all playing various styles of trashy '60s garage and surf music. It was a limited edition of 500 copies. This one was drawn back in 1993 as a logo for my French pal Phillipe's aggro/noise/punk label Pandemonium Records. The next year he used it as the cover for a comp CD of French bands which you can see below. The coloring and layout for the CD art was credited to "Sugar & Spice" (whoever that may be). This one was used as the tray card art for Rocket To You!, the 1998 debut CD by Italian pop-punkers The Manges. They often had a '50s influence on their sleeve art and posters (although not in their straight up Ramones-inspired music), so I thought this portrait of a teenage rock'n'roll fan from that era would be appropriate for their album art. A photo of the band was added to the teevee screen in the printed version. The Manges are still rockin' after all these years so check 'em out. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

I drew this way back in the early '90s, adapting the drawing from a photo in an old magazine ad depicting a sufferer of chronic gas pains. My idea was to have this face pop up in various drawings and comic strips, sort of like how Mad used to use Alfred E. Newman. I lost interest in the whole idea pretty quickly but if you look closely you can see him here and there in issues of Rockin' Bones. Stay tuned for MORE ACTION!

Just finished this sleeve for the first volume of Brazilian Nuggets, a planned 3 LP series of ultra-obscure '60s rock'n'roll from the unexplored wilds of Brazil. Groovie Records outta Portugal is gonna put these out in limited editions of 500 copies each so you'll have to act fast if you wanna get 'em. I'm a big fan and collector of '60s garage compilations so getting to work on this was a real thrill for me.
